My ancestry is full of heroes, heroines, Jewish gauchos (Google Aaron yankelevich, my great great great (maybe too many greats here) grandpa), doctors, musicians and menches. My maternal great grandparents fled Belarus and immigrated to Israel (then, Palestine) in the early 1900s. My ggrandma used her singer sewing machine to make clothing for British officer’s wives, who, in turn, helped my family save relatives fleeing nazi persecution. Because of her, and because of Israel, generations of my family survived the Holocaust. Not all of them were so lucky. My mom still has that sewing machine and one day it will belong to me. My middle name, Noa, is in honor of my ggrandma Necha.
